Matthew McConaughey never misses the opportunity to pay tribute to his home state and his new movie is no exception. It was recently announced that McConaughey will play legendary soccer coach Bill Kinder in a movie about the Dallas area women’s soccer team, Dallas Sting. The movie will be based on the women’s team that paved the way for American women’s soccer.

In 1984, the Sting team, made up of mostly high school kids, went to China to represent America in the first FIFA-world women’s tournament. This led to the first women’s World Cup in 1991, which they also won. It was the first time an American team, male or female, had won a major international tournament. This success definitely played a part in convincing the U.S. Soccer Federation that a national women’s soccer team was a worthy investment.

Sting’s story is a true underdog story and those definitely make the best movies!

As of right now we only know of the McConaughey casting but we can’t wait to see who else they bring in for the movie. McConaughey takes on the role of trailblazing coach Bill Kinder. We can’t help but think that co-owning Austin FC has helped prepare him for this role! If you follow us on Instagram or TikTok then you know that his game time enthusiasm is highly entertaining. Let’s see if he infuses that passion into his role as Coach Kinder.

While the Sting are based out of Dallas, Richardson to be exact, the movie won’t be filmed in Texas at all. Filming will take place in New Orleans. We’ll still be on the lookout for any updates so stay tuned for that.

Texas Trivia: We know one of the trailblazing Dallas Sting players personally. Kasey Jones-Parker went on to be an Art teacher at LV Berkner High School in Richardson, the very same high school Jensen Ackles graduated from.
