If you have the chance to see Wicked in IMAX, I highly recommend. Here in Austin, there are only a few places that have an IMAX theater and one of those spots is EVO Cinemas, which is where I saw the high flying flick. The sound, the screen, the vibrance, the overwhelming experience as a whole… it was so good, I may just have to see it again.
Wondering what I loved the most about the film? Wonder no more! Read on for my movie review.
Here’s everything I love about the Wicked movie!
I’ve been dancing through life every moment since I left the theater. This film adaptation of a smash Broadway musical is phenomenal! To be honest, I was a bit worried because I love the original so dang much. I wasn’t sure about the cast and I feared changes that may be made to the score. But most of all, I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to my expectations. Thank Oz, it did.
First off, let’s talk about the cast. Cynthia Erivo is fantastic. In fact, there were portions of her performance that I feel were better than Idina Menzel. That’s some high praise! While Ariana Grande does emulate Kristin Chenoweth a bit (everyone does), she is able to add her own flair and personality to the role and the small changes she makes totally work!
Then there’s Fiyero. This is one of my favorite characters in the stage production and Jonathan Bailey does not disappoint! I can not wait to see his duet with Erivo in part two (set to release in November 2025).
The only actors I feel could’ve been cast better are Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard. I simply think stronger singers could have played those roles. I don’t necessarily dislike them, I just wanted more.
As for the film making aspects, I loved it all. The choreography is fabulous, the sets and costume design are perfect, and Jon M. Chu’s direction is worthy of all the praise.
I’m sure that when I see it again, I’ll find more things to highlight. But, as of now, less than 24 hours out, these are my sentiments.
Have you seen it? Let me know your thoughts on Instagram or Threads. I’d love to hear them, especially if you disagree with me. I live for a healthy debate!
