New Zealand hotels have many features that differ from those of other countries and may surprise foreigners. Standards relevant to Europeans may look very different through local traditions, climatic thinking and approaches to the organization of life in NZ. 

The peculiarities of local hotels often become a topic of discussion. Here are some of the most unique aspects of New Zealand hotels, which are rare abroad.

Lack of Central Heating

The lack of central heating in hotels and accommodation may seem unusual in New Zealand, but it’s common in Europe. Guests may find only one heater in 70% of rooms, while only the suites have warm radiators. According to 2023 statistics, the share of homes where the main source of heating is a heat pump has increased to 66.8%, while previously this type of system was less common. This is a result of the country’s climate and construction history, but it is important for tourists to be prepared.

No Casinos in Hotels

There is no typical casino in the middle of the complex, which is often available in other parts of the world. The gambling industry is strictly regulated by the government, which means that many gambling clubs are closed. Most of the major hotels operate outside of casinos and do not operate gaming halls on their territory. This may seem unimportant because in many tourist destinations, hotel casinos are part of the standard infrastructure for Europeans. This type of format is most common in the SkyCity Auckland complex in New Zealand, where the hotel is combined with a casino and entertainment area.

SkyCity in the center of Auckland is one of the best-known examples of good connectivity in the region. Wi-Fi Connection

Free Wi-Fi in New Zealand hotels may have limits on speed or data usage. You may find this in smaller motels and outlying areas. This is less common in bigger city hotels, but outside Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch, the situation may be different. The reason is the high cost of a good connection in remote areas. According to the 2023 New Zealand Census, 90.5% of local households had access to Wi-Fi. It indicates a high level of connectivity in the country. Network speeds and stability can be lower than in big cities in rural areas, so hotels set limits to control internet costs for many numbers of guests.

Additional access in establishments can cost NZ$5–20 per day if free Wi-Fi isn’t enough. Older motels may sometimes charge for faster connections or additional data packages. Many new hotels are using fast fibre optic networks in 2026 because Wi-Fi is an intrinsic part of NZ citizens’ lives. According to international data, the number of fixed broadband connections in New Zealand was 37.85 per 100 people in 2023. Residents may meet problems with Wi-Fi in the mountains, on beautiful islands, or near natural parks in most cases.

Motels Are More Popular Than Classic Hotels

Motels are one of the most popular accommodation options when traveling between cities in New Zealand. NZ motel isn’t associated with cheap overnight stays by the roadside, unlike many European countries. This type of apartment has spacious rooms, kitchens, parking, and conditions comparable to regular hotels. Tourism of New Zealand states that there are more than 4,000 places to stay in the country, many of which are motels and comfortable apartments. Tourists choose them because of their practicality and the possibility of staying for several days, which is convenient for traveling between regions, where distances between cities can be significant.

The main reasons for the popularity of motels are:

1. Parking near the room. Convenient for those traveling by car;
2. Kitchen in the room. You can cook without visiting a cafe;
3. More space. There is a separate relaxation area;
4. Affordable price. Cheaper than big hotels;
5. Accommodation conditions. Suitable for short and long trips.

The kind of format is well-suited to the lifestyle in New Zealand, where many people travel by car to beautiful parts of the country. In smaller towns, motels are often the main accommodation option instead of big hotel complexes. They are located close to highways, nature areas, and beautiful routes. However, tourists and local residents should be aware that they will also not be able to find casinos in motels because their regulation is quite problematic in the country.
