Gilmore Girls New Braunfels

If you’ve ever watched Gilmore Girls and thought, “I want to go to Stars Hollow,” here’s good news: you basically can. New Braunfels feels like the real-life version of the quirky, charming small town that made all of us want endless coffee, cozy festivals and neighbors who somehow know your business before you do.

There isn’t a Luke’s Diner or Mrs. Kim’s antique store, but there’s the next best thing. Here’s why this small town gem is the closest thing Texans have to a Gilmore Girls fantasy.

Why New Braunfels, Texas Is the Next Best Thing to Stars Hollow

Downtown New Braunfels Feels Like a TV Set

The heart of Stars Hollow was always the town square with its gazebo, twinkle lights and local shops. Downtown New Braunfels delivers that exact vibe and feels a heck of a lot like the home of the Gilmore Girls.

Historic buildings line the streets. Locals stroll between coffee shops and boutiques. Live music drifts through the air. Now, there might be a bit more traffic than there is in Stars Hollow. But, to be fair, that town is actually located on a movie lot – the Warner Bros. lot to be exact. During the holidays, they even deck the lot out for a Stars Hollow Christmas – and New Braunfels does the same!

The Coffee Culture Is Fit For A Gilmore

A Stars Hollow-worthy town needs coffee. Lots of it. New Braunfels is quietly packed with cozy cafés where you can camp out with a latte, people-watch and spiral into your latest life crisis in peace. One of our favorites is New Braunfels Coffee, which is right across from the gazebo. Just look at how cute this spot is – especially in the fall. It’s perfect if you, like me, are an autumn!

Another spot that’s worth a visit, and worth of a Luke’s Diner comparison, is Union Station Diner. For over 15 years, Union Station Diner has been a place where “friendly folks meet and eat” for breakfast and lunch.

Local Small Town Business Is Where It’s At

Another staple of Stars Hollow is Kim’s Antiques and there are no shortage of vintage, thrift and antique shops in New Braunfels. Stroll through the Downtown Antique Mall, Lot 59, Traveling Gypsy or Red Rooster Antiques, among others.

If you need groceries, head to Arlan’s Market. Keep your eyes peeled for Dean, though you’re more likely to find him in Austin (if you know, you know).

Grab some ice cream at Scoop Street and imagine Taylor is serving you a sweet at Taylor’s Olde Fashioned Soda Shoppe. And 2tarts Bakery is described as a place for scratch-made cakes, pastries and cookies, plus light cafe fare served in a colorful, quirky setting. Sounds exactly like a place Sookie would run.

Book a stay at the Comal Inn and pretend Michel is who checked you in. Or, if you really want the small town B&B feel, head over the Gruene and check out the Gruene Mansion Inn.

The Festivals Never Stop

Stars Hollow somehow had a festival every six business days, and honestly? New Braunfels might too.

Here are just a few of the festivals that happen here:

  • Wurstfest
  • Wassailfest
  • Folk festivals
  • Farmers markets
  • Holiday parades
  • River events
  • Art walks
  • Seasonal celebrations

There is always something happening and many of the tests are filled with colorful characters, just like Kirk! Unlike bigger cities where events can feel transactional, New Braunfels events still feel community-driven. People show up because they want to be a part of the community, not because it’ll look good on Instagram. That’s very Stars Hollow.

Fall in New Braunfels Feels Especially Gilmore Girls

If your ideal aesthetic is oversized sweaters, bookstore afternoons, coffee dates, autumn festivals and pretending your life has a whimsical soundtrack… fall in New Braunfels is elite.

Texas may not have Connecticut foliage, but Hill Country autumn has its own charm. Think crisp mornings on the calm and quaint river, heritage festivals, cozy patios and enough small-town energy to make you want to dramatically reread a novel while staring out a café window.

New Braunfels Is Basically Texas Stars Hollow

No town can fully recreate the fictional magic of Stars Hollow, but New Braunfels comes surprisingly close. It’s quirky, cozy, community-oriented and it romanticizes everyday life in the exact same way Gilmore Girls did.

In a world where so many places feel overly polished or overly fast, New Braunfels still feels personal – which may be the most Stars Hollow thing of all.
