The live action Snow White film opens this week. Though many early viewers are praising the flick, movie goers at the screening we attended didn’t quite feel the same. Here’s why we think Disney’s newest remake falls short of charming.
Snow White Live Action Casting Choices
Let’s start with the positive. Rachel Zegler can sing. Yay! We don’t like when Disney makes movies with actors who have star power but cannot sing. We’re looking at you, Beauty and the Beast. Actually, I didn’t dislike that one as much as others did, but I can admit that Belle could have been cast better.
Enter Gal Gadot. Regardless of the backlash she’s experiencing right now, she wasn’t the best selection for this role. Yes, she’s beautiful but, no, she can’t really sing. While many online reviewers seem to enjoy her solo in the film, I did not. I originally thought it was the song itself, but upon further reflection, I’m pretty sure it’s her delivery. After the film ended, I was reminded of the musical episode of Once Upon A Time when the evil queen (played brilliantly by Lana Parrilla) sang “Love Doesn’t Stand a Chance.” That was a superior moment and it shouldn’t be. A big budget film like this should be the clear winner here and sadly, it is not.
Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho, It’s On To The Music We Go
In addition to the two songs from the original film – “Heigh-Ho” and “Whistle While You Work” – there are a handful of completely original songs. If I had to pick a fave, I’d say “Princess Problems” is the best. Though “Good Things Grow” is also kind of a bop. This soundtrack isn’t my fave, though. It’s definitely not on par with Frozen or Encanto, IMHO.
Updates To The Storyline
The original is just over an hour so additions were needed to make this a more well rounded story. The updates work, and I wasn’t bothered at all by the love interest being downgraded from a knight in shining armor style prince to an every man. A dose of reality is always appreciated in my corner of the world.
The Saga Of The Seven Dwarfs
We all know that there was really no winning with the portrayal of the dwarfs. Using real actors would surely be offensive. However, the CGI was a bit creepy. I do love the CGI animals though – and you know the kids will. Get ready for a slew of new plush options on your kids’ wish lists!
Overall Rating for Snow White
All in all, it’s not terrible but it’s not super charming either. It’s beautiful and magical in many ways. Some kids will love it, some will find it silly (and not in a good way). As for the adults, I doubt it will be your favorite live action tale. I give it a passable C.
