From Southern Charm, to Outer Banks, The Notebook and more, Charleston is a great spot for filming locations. We already have a full list of locations that will make you feel like you’re a Southern Charmer. Now, we’re expanding the list to include all of our favorite filming locations in Charleston!
Here are our favorite filming locations in Charleston, SC!
Republic Garden & Lounge
Any fan of Southern Charm or Southern Hospitality know about Republic. The upscale nightclub has a strict dress code, but if you want to swing by in the afternoon, the outdoor patio area is open and has a more relaxed atmosphere.
Old Village Historic District
You’ll recognize the quaint storefronts of the Old Village area in Mount Pleasant from The Notebook and Outer Banks among other things. The condo building at the end of the street is the stand-in for Kildare County Sheriff’s Station in Outer Banks.
Shem Creek
Another favorite filming locations for both Southern Charm and Outer Banks is Shem Creek. The restaurant owned by the Carreras on OB is located here and it’s a real place called The Wreck. You’ll also find many locations featured on SC including Naomi’s family’s restaurant NICO.
College of Charleston
The College of Charleston has appeared on the big screen many times. In addition to Outer Banks, the university is used in Army Wives, The Notebook, Dear John and The Patriot.
Cypress Gardens
This is a lovely spot for a walk or a canoe ride, especially if you want to recreate the one Noah and Allie share in The Notebook. Other films shot here include The Patriot, North and South, Cold Mountain and more.
Boone Hall
Allie’s family in The Notebook summers here. There’s a shot in the film of Ryan Gosling peeking through the gate. This is also the site of Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s real life wedding. Other projects that have been shot here include: Days of Our Lives, North and South, Alex Haley’s Queen, Scarlett and others.
North Charleston Coliseum
There are many locations used in the HBO series Righteous Gemstones, but the most immediately recognizable might be the home of Gemstones mega-church. The North Charleston Coliseum is used as its exterior and adjoining spots like the stage, studios, prayer room and more.
Bridge to Nowhere
One of my favorite spots to walk and snap pictures is this one. It’s seen briefly in season two of Righteous Gemstones but is featured more prominently in Outer Banks when JJ rides his motorbike here.
Fort Moultrie
In Dear John, the military installation on the ‘Congo’ coast was actually built at Fort Moultrie, an historic site that played roles in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Located on Sullivan’s Island, you can also see the house the character of Savannah lived in. Her beachfront home is located at 1109 Middle Street.
The American Theater
This theater makes for a lovely photo op. It’s no wonder it was used as a filming location for The Notebook.
