If you’re planning a trip to Norway and hoping to see the Aurora Borealis, we’ve got a recommendation for you. Here’s how we were able to see the elusive Northern Lights even in the worst weather conditions.
The best way to chase the Aurora Borealis Northern Lights in Tromso, Norway!
While visiting Oslo, Norway in January of 2025, we decided to book a brief last minute trip to Tromsø with the hopes of catching the Northern Lights. Friends were already planning a trip and they had booked a tour with Marianne’s Heaven On Earth Aurora Chaser Tours. After researching the tour, and seeing that their guides have a 95% success rate, we jumped at the chance to join.
There are two ways to book the tour. You can do so through Viator. Or, you can directly book through the tour company, After researching the price for each, we found that booking direct was cheaper, especially since the exchange rate when paying in Kroner is a benefit at the moment.
Here’s what Marianne’s Aurora Chaser Tours entail:
This is a small group tour. There were only four people in our van which made for a roomy and relaxed ride. During the drive through the Tromso Fjords, the guides communicate and use apps to find the best spots where the lights are visible. This means, even if they have to drive to Finland, they will (as they did on our tour). That explains why they have a 12 year average success rate of 95%.
Tripods and winter suits are supplied as is food and drink. We were served tomato soup, cheese sandwiches, hot chocolate, cookies, tea, coffee and chocolate.
The weather was miserable in Tromsø and there was absolutely no visibility on the night we took the tour. However, after a 3.5 hour drive into Finland, we were able to get a brief sighting of the lights. But that’s not all! We also spotted a rare polar stratospheric cloud.
Someday, I’d love to see the entire sky lit up in a magical burst of color. For now, this will have to do. I’m thankful to Marianne’s Aurora Chaser Tours for making it happen no matter what!
