Depending on what generation you were born or how deep your love for 80’s sitcoms runs, you’ve probably heard of Cheers. The iconic series has been off the air for 30 years, but it aired on NBC for 11 seasons from 1982 through 1993. It even led to the spinoff Frasier, which went on to air for 11 seasons as well!
On a recent trip to Boston, we visited the bar the series was based on. Then, upon our return, we got some really great news! The show will be honored at the ATX TV Festival in 2023. Read on for details.
Take a trip to the Cheers bar in Boston!
Cheers has often been named one of the top TV shows of all time. So, it’s no surprise people are still flocking to the bar that inspired it all. Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood bar called Bull & Finch Pub served as inspo for the series. Now it’s simply called “Cheers.” It still includes the original full dining room downstairs. But they’ve added a replica set upstairs so you can drink and dine like you’re on the show. Sam Malone not included.
The series featured a great cast including Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Kirstie Alley, Kelsey Grammer, Rhea Perlman, George Wendt, John Ratzenberger and Woody Harrelson. But that’s not all. There were also plenty of notable guest stars like: Emma Thompson, Alex Trebek, Johnny Carson, Leah Remini, Lisa Kudrow, Thomas Haden Church, Harry Connick Jr., Christopher Lloyd, Corey Feldman and Christopher McDonald.
We can only imagine the stories that came from 11 years on set with that cast and those guest stars. And now we may get to hear some of those stories – live and in person! That’s because our favorite local festival ATX TV Festival just announced that Cheers will be a part of the 2023 festival. They’ll honor the show’s 30th anniversary by presenting the annual “Achievement in Television eXcellence” Award to director, producer, creator, and author James Burrows. Burrows will attend and talk about his one-of-a-kind career as the co-creator/director of Cheers. He also directed more than 1,000 episodes of television, including iconic sitcoms Taxi, Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, and many, many more. Fingers crossed for a cast reunion as well!
