If you’ve ever wanted to feel like a kid again, one with big dreams of being an astronaut, then the Space Center Houston is worth a visit. Even if you don’t wish to venture into space IRL, this is the place to learn what life in space is really like. Both educational and awe-inspiring, this is one adventure that will leave you with a feeling that’s out of this world.
Located just a short drive from Houston, Space Center Houston is packed with wow worthy experiences. Here’s what you need to know before you go!

What To Know Before You Visit Space Center Houston
What It Is – And Isn’t
First off, it’s important to note that this is the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center. It is not the launch site. You’ll find that in Florida. But don’t worry, it’s still packed with real-deal artifacts, astronaut training areas and interactive exhibits that make space feel surprisingly close.
How To Buy Tickets
You can buy tickets at the center, of course, but you’ll save money by purchasing online. Tickets are $5 cheaper online but you’ll have to plan your arrival time because you’ll be purchasing a time slot for entry. Parking is an additional $10. Obviously, the earlier you arrive, the better. This place gets packed! Which leads us to the next fact…
Don’t Miss The Tram Tours
Book your tram tours immediately upon arrival. General admission includes the campus tram tour which includes a stop at Rocket Park. But you must have a timed ticket for this tram. This tour is included with a GA ticket. There is also an additional paid tour that takes you to the astronaut training facilities. And if you only care to see Rocket Park, you can do that without a reservation. Reservations are made at the Customer Service center inside the center.
Virtual Reality Adventures
There are two “rides” inside the center. One is a spacecraft you board to explore the moons of Saturn. This somewhat dated ride is $8 and fun for younger kids. There’s also a VR experience for $10 which includes glasses and a moving seat that lets you experience lift off and orbit.

More Tips
- Plan your trip for a weekday to avoid large crowds.
- Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes as there’s a lot of standing and walking around.
- Be prepared for heat since the tram rides, Rocket Park and space shuttle are all located outside.
- The entire day will probably take you over four hours.
- The Moonwalkers film, narrated by Tom Hanks, is one hour long so that definitely adds to the day’s time commitment.
- There is a food court on site though many of the vendors shut down just after lunch time.
- Remember that you aren’t the only one there. Be respectful. Try not to stand right in front of exhibits for long periods of time, take a picture and move on.

Fun Film Fact
Several major films and documentaries have utilized NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston for filming, including Apollo 13, Armageddon and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The facility’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (water tank) was used for astronaut training scenes in Armageddon and also served as a research site for The Martian.
There’s a lot to see at Space Center Houston, and it’s easy to burn out halfway through. Take breaks, prioritize what excites you most and don’t feel like you have to do everything. It’s a wonderful experience, no matter how you choose to do it.
