Hunger Games

In the Hunger Games, District 12 is part of the coal mining region of the Appalachia portion of the Eastern US. In reality, the first installment of the franchise was shot in North Carolina. Read on to learn more about the filming locations for the series.

Filming Locations for The Hunger Games

We must start with the abandoned town that serves as the village where Katniss and Peeta reside in the first film. Henry River Mill Village, near Hildebran, stands along the Henry River and is now a ghost town. The deserted homes are in dispair and the land they stand on is private. We were unaware of that when we visited years ago. We advise you tread carefully if you stop for a visit.

Here are some pictures we snapped with our Katniss Everdeen Funko pop in the village in 2016.

The local forest where Katniss and Gale hunt is the Coleman Boundary, part of the Pisgah National Fores. You can find it northeast of Asheville near Barnardsville on Route 197 / North Forks Road.

The woods around the cornucopia are actually DuPont State Forest, located at Staton Road in Cedar Mountain, about 10 miles southwest of Hendersonville. Triple Falls, on the Little River serves as the area where Peeta disguises himslef as part of the rocks. The forest and its waterfalls are also seen in The Last Of The Mohicans.

Other North Carolina filming locations, including some in Charlotte, are listed here.

Swan House Hunger Games

As for the house of President Snow, that’s the Swan House, located in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s located on the campus of the Atlanta History Center. Coincidentally, filming for the subsequent movies was moved to the Atlanta area.

The Best Georgia filming locations:

  • Atlanta Marriott Marquis – The tribute’s quarters before the Quarter Quell
  • Sweetwater Creek State Park – Scenes where Katniss and Gale share a kiss
  • Clayton County Park – The Quarter Quell arena was filmed on the beach, complete with the cornucopia in the center (other scenes of the arena beach and jungle were shot in Hawaii)
  • Pratt-Pullman Yard – Home to The Hob

The last two installments of the franchise, Mockingjay Part 1 & 2, were filmed mostly overseas. The interiors of Snow’s Mansion were shot in the Château de Voisins in Louveciennes, France.

Back in Georgia, Sweetwater Creek State Park returns as the area where Gale and Katniss go hunting above District 13. The quarry where Katniss sings is also located near Atlanta. It’s called Bellwood Quarry.

The shots of the Capitol, however, were filmed in France and Germany. You’ll find more details on those locations here.
