I’m going to keep this simple because I don’t want to ruin anything about The Housemaid for you. Let me say this… If you loved the book, you’re going to enjoy this movie. And if you didn’t read the book, you’re going to enjoy this movie.
I did not read the book and I went into the movie completely blind. I did not see the trailer and I had no idea about the story. I simply knew that Amanda Seyfried plays the employer and Sydney Sweeney plays the housemaid. I spent the first 30 minutes in a state of confusion, thinking, and even whispering aloud, “What is going on?” And then, halfway through the film, I thought I had figured it out. Turns out, I had not.
There are many twists, turns and anxiety inducing moments in The Housemaid and it’s a wild ride – a wild ride I loved!
In the lobby after the viewing, I spoke with a book reader who loved it as well. She informed me that the script follows the book to a T. She had no notes. Neither do I.
The Housemaid opens in theaters on December 19, 2025.
