The stage version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is entertaining, witty and great big fun! Playing at the Austin Playhouse, the adaptation of the classic film will transport you to the glamour of the French Riviera. Witness two con men compete to one up each other and win the title of best player in town.
You may recall that the 1988 movie stars Michael Caine and Steve Martin while the original Broadway production starred John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz. I actually saw the original cast on Broadway and I had not seen the show again – until now!
Review: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Austin Playhouse
This is a super fun show and seeing it in such an intimate setting is just perfect. The casting, for the most part, is superb. The real highlight of this show, though, is the dynamic duo of Scott Shipman (as Lawrence Jameson) and Andrew Cannata (as Freddy Benson). After witnessing Norbert Leo Butz’s Tony Award winning performance of “Great Big Stuff” on Broadway, I was worried I would be disappointed by a local theater performance but that was definitely not the case! And then there’s his fantastically funny delivery of “Love is My Legs” that will make you want to stand up and cheer. You see what I did there?
The entire cast is comprised of familiar faces from the Austin theater scene. I look forward to continuing to follow their careers and seeing more of many of them. Most notably, I hope to see more of Carolyn O’Brien who plays Jolene. which is a feature role in the first act.
