Golden Girls

Celebrate the sassiness of our favorite ladies with Golden Girls – The Laughs Continue. Texas Performing Arts presents this all new adventure at McCullough Theater December 10 through 22, 2024.

To get ready for what’s sure to be a hilarious night of golden comedy, we sat down with one of the show’s stars. Vince Kelley brilliantly plays Blanche. We chatted with him about portraying an icon, what to expect from the show, thoughts on Wicked and more.

First off, here’s a little bit about Golden Girls – The Laughs Continue:

Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue brings Miami’s sassiest seniors to stages around the country for one more hurrah. We find Sophia out on bail after being busted by the DEA for running a drug ring for retirees. Blanche and Rose have founded CreakN, a thriving sex app for seniors. And Dorothy is trying to hold it all together with help from a new (much) younger sex-crazed lover.

What to expect from the Austin performance:

Vince told us his favorite thing about the show is the controlled freedom with the script. Because of the cast’s ability to improv and change things up each night, you’ll never get the same show twice. And since they will be in Austin for 12 days, there are sure to be plenty of Austin-centric details added to the performance.

We asked Vince what he knows about ATX. “We know that Austin in weird and they like to keep it that way!,” he said. He also mentioned that it’s beneficial that the city has a thriving art scene and is a “a progressive, fun, crazy city.” He then inquired what we think should be included in the show. We mentioned barbecue, of course, the politics of Austin versus the rest of the state, Matthew McConaughey, Glen Powell and more.

Speaking of Powell, while chatting about Jonathan Bailey’s appeal in Wicked, he referred to the Brit as the “gay man’s Glen Powell.” He is one charming, charming man. In regards to the blockbuster hit, Vince said the film, which Rue McLanahan starred in on Broadway, is a “beautiful marriage of respecting what came before… but then they really made it their own.”

Some Golden advice for 2025:

We ended our time together by asking, “If Blanche had a slogan or a wish for 2025, what would it be?”

Blanche would say, get while the gettin’s good. While we can still go out and have a good time… do it. Do it now. Live for today.

Tickets for Golden Girls – The Laughs Continue are available now. Prices start at $25.
