If you can can can take the time to see Moulin Rouge on stage in Austin, you will have a raucous time. We promise! Playing through May 24 at Bass Concert Hall, here’s what to expect from the eye popping performance!
Moulin Rouge! The Musical Now Playing In Austin
The show starts exactly how you expect is to. A dazzling display of lights sets the backdrop as four of the club’s finest belt out the lyrics to the infamous hit “Lady Marmalade.” If you’re hoping to follow along with the song selection throughout the show, the playbill is missing that page. That’s because there are SO MANY montages of popular music woven into the performance that they couldn’t possibly list them all. Just know that you will hear dozens of tunes you know and love.
The best performances, however, are the songs written specifically to support this story. “Come What May,” the original song from the film is the highlight, though the special arrangement of Elton John’s “Your Song” is great too. As for Satine, the lead role in the musical (and the best performer of this particular cast), she has many stand-out performances, most notably her opening number “Sparkling Diamonds” which is a medley of “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend” (Marilyn Monroe) and “Material Girl” (Madonna).

Now, let’s talk about what really makes this show shine – the sets and the lighting design! Even in the moments that the show falls flat, the aesthetic makes up for it. It truly is a dazzling show that will captivate all of your senses. Well, maybe not smell – though perhaps they should look into adding that!
One-On-One With A Cast Member
We spoke with cast member Kaitlin Mesh who’s making her national tour debut as Nini. Kaitlin joins the tour after nearly six years on Broadway with Moulin Rouge the Musical as an original broadway company member (OBC u/s Nini). While she’s never been to Austin before, she’s excited for the authentic Mexican (read TexMex) cuisine and finding out what makes Austin “weird.”

Of course, we couldn’t pass up the chance to ask her favorite thing about the show. “It’s hard to pick just one thing,” she said. “But the music and choreography are certainly at the top of my list!”
We couldn’t agree more. Don’t miss your chance to see this hit musical in Austin. Tickets are available here.
