Move over Elon, there’s a new Musk in town. Actually, Kimbal Musk is no stranger to the ATX. The Tesla and SpaceX board member told Spill the ATX that he spends about one week a month in the Austin area. This weekend, however, he was busy welcoming guests to his restaurant The Kitchen, located at Sixth and Guadalupe.

The farm-to-table restaurant offers a variety of fare, including grilled oysters, gluten-free crab fried rice with Thai lime-nam jim, tagliatelle with duck confit, and Urfa carrots with whipped feta. At a soft launch preview event, we tried a few other dishes as well. Lobster rolls, steak tartare, roasted chicken and Denver steak were all served. But it was the Himachi we liked best!

Amidst getting a taste of the menu offerings and sipping on signature cocktails like an old fashioned made with Garrison Brothers Small Batch and Earl Grey tea, we got a chance to chat with Kimbal Musk about all things Austin. Since we had his undivided attention, we couldn’t miss the chance to put him on the spot with our Texas This or That quiz.

As usual, we started with the easy questions like tacos or barbecue (BBQ) and queso our guac (queso when he doesn’t have anywhere to be). But things got really fun when we slid in our celebrity options.

Confronted with choosing between Willie Nelson or George Strait, the restauranteur said, “Willie Nelson, for sure! But I actually am a huge fan of George Strait. But Willie Nelson for sure.”

Between Beyonce versus Post Malone, he chooses Post. And when it comes to Matthew McConaughey or Woody Harrelson, here’s what he had to say.

“Funny enough, they’re both friends of mine,” he replied. Then, he easily chose McConaughey.

The Kitchen is hosting a soft launch period through Wednesday, November 13, during which a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Central Texas Food Bank and Les Dames D’escoffier. The space opens officially on on Thursday, November 14, opening for dinner daily at 4 p.m. Brunch and lunch service are planned for the future.
