Chevy Chase is once again striking a nerve with the new CNN documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not. Love him or loathe him, the film definitely has people talking. Here’s my take.
Thoughts on Chevy Chase And His New CNN Documentary
Though many feel that the controversies (abrasive behavior, immaturity, poor comedy choices, racism, etc.) aren’t highlighted enough, I can appreciate that these things weren’t completely omitted. When I saw that Chase was involved with, and even promoting the doc, I knew the filmmakers would only go so far with these topics. After all, if it was to be a total hit piece, Chase would not have agreed to be involved. At the same time, I don’t think they make excuses for him or ignore his ass hole image. In fact, he’s an ass hole in some of film’s interviews.
I also don’t think this film was going to change anyone’s opinion of the comedian/ actor. It sheds a little light on why he’s reacted and behaved the way he has over the years. It humanizes him and highlights some of his struggles. But it also confirms that he can be a jerk. No surprise there.
What Other People Are Saying About Chevy Chase
Spill the ATX interviewed Chase in November, ahead of his Christmas Vacation screening and Q&A tour stop in Austin. The comments on the videos we posted perfectly illustrate how people feel about him. Some appreciate his movies and style of humor, others detest him. Again, no surprise there.
On one of the more popular comment strings, @secondstarlight says:
“Chevy Chase is a huge jerk!” Ya know what? He’s never been a jerk to me. And he’s made me laugh many, many times.
The comment is liked by over 2500 people. However, it has prompted dozens of comments stating the opposite.
@moontwistx replied: Well unfortunately it doesn’t change the fact that he is indeed a jerk.
Another argument comes from @litterboxfairy who states:
Does he have to be a jerk to you before he’s considered a jerk? And because he made you laugh, then it’s all ok? Yeah, Bill Cosby made me laugh for a lot for many years.
Other comments compare him to a rapist. Not sure that’s the right argument to make, but it’s obvious people have extreme opinions here.
