While on vacation in Copenhagen, we came across a poster advertising a performance with Charles Esten of Nashville and Outer Banks fame. It was happening that very night, so we finished up our sightseeing, bought a ticket online, rushed over to the venue and walked into the DR Koncerthuset right as he stepped on stage.
We were lucky to catch the singer/ songwriter in Copenhagen as it was the second to last stop on the Love Ain’t Pretty European Tour. He finished things up the following night in Oslo, Norway.
Here are a few of our favorite things about the Charles Esten Love Ain’t Pretty Tour Stop in Copenhagen, Denmark.
It’s a family affair!
It’s essentially a one man show with Esten switching between piano, acoustic and electric guitar. But he’s not always playing solo. At various stops on the tour, he brought future son-in-law (and opening act) Charlie Greene of Betcha on stage to join him for a couple of songs. At this particular show they performed “Down the Road” and “Sound of Silence.”
He was also joined by daughter Taylor Noelle for a song. Together they performed “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.” Honestly, we’d have loved to hear more from her. The following day we were streaming her music on Spotify while drinking wine and enjoying a leisurely Friday night with friends.
Deacon Claybourne is alive and well!
After reviewing the set lists from other tour stops, it seems he doesn’t always perform tunes from Nashville. That made this show even more special for us as he performed both “No One Will Ever Love You (Like I Do)” and “Life That’s Good.” The latter actually turned into a sing along that filled us with such joy. He also replied to a fan in the crowd who hollered, “Where’s your hat?” Deacon don’t where no hat, he hollered back.
Speaking of fans, there were some true super fans in the crowd. It was almost as entertaining to watch them as it was to watch Chip. And though it was a relatively small venue, he did a fantastic job playing to the audience like it was the biggest and best show ever, while still making every single fan feel special and seen.
Performance highlights included:
- “He Ain’t Me”
- “I Used to Smoke and Drink and Love You (I Still Do)”
- “Down the Road”
- “Sweet Summer Saturday Night”
- “A Life That’s Good”
