Not gonna lie. I thought I knew exactly what I was walking into with Annie. It’s a story about a sweet orphan, hard-knock life and a little “Tomorrow” that has us all going home humming.
But this show? It surprised me.
What to Expect with Annie at Bass Concert Hall
First off, let’s talk about the energy. The minute the lights come up, those kids come out swinging. “It’s a Hard Knock Life” hit hard – in the best way. It’s sharp, sassy and so in sync. This is the kind of number that makes the audience sit up a little straighter.
And then there’s Annie herself. Whoever cast this role knew exactly what they were doing. The voice, the timing, the confidence… she carries that stage like a pro. Hazel Vogel is a total standout.
Now, the song that completely caught me off guard: “N.Y.C.” I didn’t expect to love it, but I did. It is full-on Broadway sparkle. The song is fast-paced, joyful and somehow makes you feel like you’re standing on a corner in Midtown with a hot dog and big dreams.
Next up: “Tomorrow. The performance of this most known song is as lovely and goosebump-y as you hope.
The set design it on point and the costumes have just enough sparkle. The whole show has that perfect balance of vintage charm and modern energy.
Oh and one more thing. The dog! Yep, Sandy shows up, steals the scene and walks off like a true star. No notes.
