Freeform’s Cruel Summer is back for season two with a whole new cast and plot! Much like the first season, the new season debuted at ATX Television Festival where we got to chat with the lead cast members. We already shared our interviews with Lexi Underwood and Sadie Stanley. Now we’re chatting with Griffin Gluck.
But first, if you’re new to the Cruel Summer universe you can read about season one here. Both seasons of the series are mysteries set to multiple timelines. Season two is set in 1999 and 2000 while season one was set in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Griffin Gluck plays Luke Chambers. You might know him from his various projects but the one that sticks out the most is Private Practice. Gluck reunites with his Private Practice parents Paul Adelstein and KaDee Strickland in Cruel Summer. In fact, Adelstein plays his father again! Keep reading to find out what he had to say about the new season.
We started by asking Griffin to describe the series to us like he would to a friend and here is what he said:
I just say watch it. I just tell them to watch it, that it’s an anthology. You can check out season one and see what the whole vibe is. I tell them that there’s three different timelines which can be confusing if you’re hopping in as a new fan. But I tell them about the coloring and all that stuff. I tell them about the teen drama and the love triangle and the murder mystery aspect of it all. And that’s pretty much it. I kind of leave it at that. I’m very well known for my ability to keep a secret, okay? I don’t spoil anything.

Here’s more of our interview with Griffin Gluck!
Season 2 is set in the late 90s. What’s something you learned about the 90s?
“The serious answer is the double standard and the misogyny that was going on in the 90s. That was big. We talked on that a lot this season. But let’s see… what’s the funny answer? I was born in 2000 not too not too far off from this obviously, I was a baby, I was a child, but in my childhood I could remember, you know, that that era of technology. I was alive before iPhones came out, I had a T-Mobile razor flip phone.
Oh, one thing that I totally didn’t understand. There’s a line in the show where we’re talking about vices and Sadie’s character goes, “Vices are fine unless it’s an empty stomach and a zodiac full of Zima.” And that one really took me a while to wrap my brain around. Didn’t know what a zodiac was. Apparently, it’s a water bottle. Didn’t know what Zima was. Apparently, it’s an alcohol. Yeah, that line made no sense to me.”
What’s your drink of choice?
“Whisky sour.”
We like to “Keep Austin weird.” What’s something weird about you?
“I’m wearing a jacket and sweatshirt in Austin (in June) – that’s pretty weird.”
What’s your favorite TV show of all time?
“BoJack Horsemen (we mention that co-star Lexi Underwood gave the same answer). Yeah, we bonded a lot about that. Although, I’ve really been into 3rd Rock From The Sun recently. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was like 12-years-old, awesome.”
Who is your dream dinner guest?
“Dead or alive? Mac Miller, probably. Big fan of his music. Seems like a cool guy. I think him and I would get along.”
What’s your theme song?
“So It Goes by Mac Miller. Keeping on theme with the Mac Miller thing.”
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
“I would like to be able to fly, I think.”
