Yep, you read that right. You can get a ticket to the fictional Star Wars planet of Tatooine at the Austin Airport. And that’s not all. Other destinations include: Bottle City of Kandor, Genovia, Hill Valley, Hogwarts, The Matrix, Neverland, Panem, Wakanda, Westeros, Wonderland and more!

The destinations are part of an art installation called Interimaginary Departures. It’s located at the infinity gate (marked by an infinity symbol) which you can find between gates 12 and 14 at the Austin airport.

Interimaginary Departures includes a flight information display board listing flight times and destinations as well as a departure board with facts about current destinations. But it’s also interactive! Visitors can answer a few questions on the cast bronze ticket machine and then receive a printed or virtual ticket. There are also announcements giving you instructions and information about the upcoming flight.

Here’s a video we made illustrating the process.

Here’s a bit about how artist Janet Zweig came up with the idea, courtesy of AustinTexas.gov.

Inspired by 3-D computer rendering and The City and The City by China Mieville, a novel about two cities existing within the same space, the reimagined hold room also draws inspiration from across the worlds of science fiction and fantasy. The piece features two screens displaying rotating flight information for hundreds of imaginary destinations, from the Wizard of Oz’s Emerald City to Gallifrey, the home world of Doctor Who’s Time Lords. Every few minutes, an overhead loudspeaker provides amusing boarding information about the otherworldly locations.

We’re unsure how long the exhibit will be on display but you can learn more about it here.
