Exclusive Look Inside Meow Wolf in Grapevine, Texas

By Lola Hagopian

Meow Wolf has opened its first Texas location and we got a first look inside the immersive experience. If you’re wondering if it’s worth the trip to DFW, the answer is yes. And if you’re not aware of the Meow Wolf experience, check out this post before reading on.

Now that’s taken care of, let’s head inside.

Here are highlights from Meow Wolf: The Real Unreal.

The Art

  • The Real Unreal is a product of over 150 artists, 40 of which are Texas artists located all over the state.
  • While you’ll see some continuity from other locations, Grapevine is the only one that features a house like the original Santa Fe location. The house has numerous similarities like the iconic portals but it’s different in many ways.
  • The journey begins in a seemingly ordinary front yard in the Midwest. Questions and clues follow.
  • An intersection of refrigerator portals from various dimensions takes guests on unexpected adventures.
  • There’s a piece of art made entirely of scrambled eggs, tomatoes, and licorice!

The Neon Kingdom

  • Like the Denver locale, the new location includes an event venue called The Neon Kingdom.
  • The space will be used to host events but it also serves as a memorial of sorts to honor co-founder Matt King who passed away in 2022.
  • Various nods to King are located in the space like actual flowers from his memorial and a shark jaw that was one of his original pieces.
  • This ode to Matt seems extra fitting since he was originally from the Dallas area.

The Cafe

  • This new location also has a cafe which serves products from over 30 local Texas vendors!
  • There’s also an awesome retail store that sells both Meow Wolf merchandise and that of the artists involved.
  • The gift shop will be open at times for mall-goers without the exhibition ticket.

Portals of Possibility

We had the pleasure of catching a keynote from new CEO Jose Tolosa while we were at the preview. Here’s something he said that we wanted to share:

The brilliance of so many Texas based artists in collaboration with our Meow Wolf artists came together to create a completely unique, ingenious space. This next chapter of the Meow Wolf universe is a celebration of the artists who push the boundaries of imagination. We invite everyone to come experience these portals of possibility.

Just like with every other location, you just have to experience it yourself to truly grasp it. Tickets are on sale now!

More About Meow Wolf

Meow Wolf originally opened in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2008. It started off as a small collective of Santa Fe artists wanting to display their work and develop their skills together. As they worked toward more audience-driven experiences they also got the attention of Game of Thrones creator, George R. R. Martin, who financially backed the project. Since 2008, the brand has taken on a life of its own, they now have a total of four exhibits located in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, Denver and now, Grapevine. Houston is scheduled to open some time in 2024.
