Spy Kids is back! Well kind of. Netflix has landed a deal with Skydance and Spyglass for a reimagining of the Spy Kids series. And they’re bringing back the original director, Austin’s own Robert Rodriquez.
The four-part series was all filmed here in Austin at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios. There is no news yet about the re-boot being filmed here in Austin but with Rodriguez writing, directing and producing, there’s a great possibility it just might be.
Here’s what we know about the upcoming Spy Kids film.
As mentioned, Rodriguez will be writing, producing, and directing the new movie. Ex-wife Elizabeth Avellan and son Racer Max Rodriguez will also be producing alongside him.
The first three films were released in a span of three consecutive years, 2001 to 2003 but the fourth installment Spy Kids: All The Time In The World was released eight years later in 2011. The four films collectively earned over $550 million dollars worldwide. The new installment will be the only one to be released directly on a streaming service.
Rodriguez isn’t necessarily known for his family-friendly movies. He is best known for films like; From Dusk Till Dawn, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Grindhouse, Planet Terror, Deathproof, Machete and Sin City. Somehow in between all the thrillers he surprisingly managed to make a handful of family-friendly films.
When asked why he originally did Spy Kids, Rodriguez said it’s because he wanted to make a movie about his big Latin family but made them spies to make them more interesting!
The new Spy Kids will be the second family oriented movie Rodriguez has made with Netflix. The first being We Can Be Heroes, which was released in 2020.
The original Spy Kids series, had an amazing core cast: Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa PenaVega, Daryl Sabara, Alan Cumming, Tony Shalhoub, Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo. While we loved the main cast, we also loved the slew of guest appearances in all the films.
Here’s a list of actors who were a part of the original movie series.
- Sylvester Stallone
- Teri Hatcher
- Robert Patrick
- Mike Judge
- Salma Hayek
- George Clooney
- Steve Buscemi
- Bill Paxton
- Elijah Wood

- Taylor Momsen
- Christopher McDonald
- Jessica Alba
- Joel McHale
- Jeremy Piven
- Ricky Gervais

Netflix has not released much else about the project. There’s no news on who will be cast in the Netflix movie but with Rodriguez at the helm, we’re sure there will be a few guest appearances or original cast cameos. After all, he did convince all those actors to agree to come to Austin and be in a family movie about spies.
A year ago Rodriguez posted this photo of him and Antonio Banderas on his Instagram. We can’t help but wonder if talk of the reimagining had already started.
As soon as we get information about the cast, filming location and, of course, the release date, we’ll be sure to spill the aTx. In the meantime, stay up to date on more posts like this by following us on Instagram.
