Have you heard of the Austin cannabis company Hometown Hero? Not only do they offer stellar product, but the brand was started by two friends who wanted to help veterans – the relieving properties of cannabis are no secret in the veterans’ community.

Friends Lukas Gilkey and Lewis Hamer started the company in 2015. As a US Coast Guard veteran, Gilkey saw the effects of trauma on his friends from other branches. He knew that for many vets, a charity or nonprofit might be their only lifeline. With their last few bucks, the duo started a business selling products to local shops and before the company even made a cent in profit, they were making donations to veterans charities.

It’s been that way from the beginning, and it will always be that way. Some of the organizations they have donated to include The Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Soldiers’ Angels and Operation Finally Home.
